The essentials
- You deserve accurate information and no judgement, whatever your situation.
- Abortion in Ethiopia is permitted under specific conditions set in law. Under Article 551 of the Ethiopian Criminal Code of 2005, care is allowed when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, when continuing it would put the life or health of the woman or child at risk, when the child would be born with a serious and incurable disability, or when the woman cannot bring up the child because of a physical or mental disability or because she is a minor. In an emergency with grave and immediate danger, care is allowed too. For rape or incest, the woman's own word is enough.
- A doctor can tell you if your situation fits.
- Safe care means care from a trained provider, in a proper health facility, using methods recognised by health authorities and the WHO.
- Safe care is confidential. Your privacy is protected.
What safe care involves, in general
- There's more than one safe approach, and which one fits depends on how many weeks along the pregnancy is and your health. The World Health Organization recognises two main kinds of safe care: medical abortion using recommended medicines, and a procedure, most often gentle suction known as vacuum aspiration.
- A trained health provider chooses the right approach, guides the care throughout, and stays available afterwards. A doctor explains what applies to you.
- Safe care isn't something to attempt alone with informally bought pills, herbs, or word-of-mouth methods. Those carry real danger.
- If cost or privacy worries you, tell a doctor. Safe, confidential paths exist.
Post-abortion care
- Post-abortion care is support after an abortion or a miscarriage. It's available and confidential.
- It can include treatment of any complications such as bleeding or infection, care to make sure the womb is empty, clear information on what a normal recovery looks like and which warning signs mean you should return, emotional support, and contraception counselling with a method offered there and then if you want it. Advice on protecting yourself from sexually transmitted infections is part of it too.
- Reach a doctor promptly if you have heavy bleeding, fever, or strong pain after an abortion or miscarriage.
